The Last Alchemist takes place in the ArcaDiisk introduced in a previous post. What isn’t discussed is the inspiration behind the setting and its creation. The larger world is a dystopian landscape void of the ecosystems that inhabited past. The consequence for abandoning the natural world is a life confined to a city that offers succor from the ravaging heat of a day’s light. The technological advancements needed to sustain life were made possible by the culling of the wilds, placing humanity on the brink of extinction.
This abandonment of nurturing in favor for a digital world made possible by machines, which in turn erodes the natural, is a concept I find increasingly interesting as the climate crisis continues to remain divisive. As a reflection, the advancements in AI and automated production create an argument just as hot as the climate. It feels to me as a war of two worlds, one fighting for survival, the other to conquer. To capture this within a world of fantasy and science fiction, I have woven a magic system within the core of the natural world. In turn, the technology contained within the pages stand as a symbol of innovation, passion, and gluttony behind the human drive of growth.
A dystopian setting where the natural world is at odds with human advancement is not a new concept. The weaving of science fiction and fantasy genres is also not a new concept in the realm of YA writing. Armed with this reality, I set out to write something exciting and unique, while staying true to the inspirations I hold close. Of course, it can’t all be given away before it’s ready to hit the shelves—but I look forward to revealing more about this project and the story of The Last Alchemist.
